Did you know that 61% of Canadian women will face an unexpected pregnancy in their lifetime? That means that more than half of the women you encounter every single day have had or will have this shared experience.
But that doesn’t make it any easier.
If you suspect you may have become pregnant or have recently received confirmation of an unplanned pregnancy, you’re probably experiencing a whirlwind of emotions. While your feelings and decisions in response to this information are entirely your own, it’s vital to know that you are not alone.
Many resources exist in Hamilton and the surrounding areas to support women navigating an unplanned pregnancy. In this post, we’ll outline the services and programs available directly through Atwell Centre and highlight some other options available through other organizations.
For immediate support or to speak with a caring staff member in person, contact Atwell Centre directly.
Pregnancy Options Support at Atwell Centre
Atwell Centre: Pregnancy Options Support is a core provider of pregnancy support services in Hamilton. Providing a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for women and men exploring pregnancy options, we offer the following in-house services and programs:
Pregnancy Testing
We offer free, medical-grade pregnancy tests that can be administered on-site by a certified nurse. Once a pregnancy is confirmed, we can use ultrasound imaging to provide real-time information, including gestational age and the presence of cardiac activity.
Post-Abortion Support (P.A.S.)
While we do not offer medical abortions at our clinic, we provide a safe space for women who have undergone them to receive counselling and support. As you recover, we are available to walk alongside you every step of the way.
Pregnancy & Beyond
This program is tailored to young mothers who decide to continue with an unplanned pregnancy. Offering support throughout pregnancy and the perinatal period, it involves education and access to resources such as diapers, wipes, baby food, free clothing, and much more.
Adoption – Birth Parent Advocacy
Atwell Centre is not an adoption agency, but we do offer accurate information about the adoption process and can connect young women and their partners with adoption organizations and resources. If your parenting choice is adoption, we will provide ongoing support.
Referrals, Connections, and Community Resources
In addition to our own services at Atwell Centre, we also provide referrals to professionals, services, and community programs beyond the scope of our organization. If you need to access a particular program or resource, we can help to connect you with:
- medical doctors
- professional counsellors
- adoption services
- midwives
- other community organizations
- and much more
Hamilton has a number of different support programs and services designed to assist women, including those struggling with the realities of unplanned pregnancies. From mental health services to prenatal classes, we can help connect you with all the meaningful supports and assistance you deserve.
